Flagship Volvo XC100 SUV rumoured for 2023

Reports suggest Volvo will develop a battery electric coupe-style SUV that will rival Range Rover in terms of luxury fit and finish.

The so-called XC100 will be developed alongside the next generation of the Swedish brand’s popular XC90 SUV, which will go on sale within the next three years.

Reports suggest the model will be branded the Volvo XC100 Recharge and will only be available as a pure electric vehicle, while the XC90 will retain petrol-electric hybrid engine options.

Volvo is reportedly developing an all-new coupe-style SUV flagship that will be based heavily on the next-generation XC90.

A prominent media outlet in the United States suggests the new model, which will be branded XC100 Recharge, will be an EV and will take its styling cues from both the next XC90 SUV and Polestar electric models – specifically the Polestar 3 – which will be on the market by the XC100’s rumoured launch date in 2023.

Designed to fill a gap in the current Volvo SUV range which would compete with an SUV niche occupied by large ‘coupe-like’ SUVs, such as the Audi Q8, the Volvo XC100 Recharge will likely feature sleeker, more rakish lines than the XC90 and come with a bespoke cabin that seats just four in comfort. The vehicle will likely up the luxury factor, meaning Volvo could have a direct competitor for the Range Rover.

The US media outlet suggests both the XC90 and XC100 will be built on Volvo's next-generation SPA-II architecture which, as its name suggests, is an update to the manufacturer’s current SPA platform. SPA-II will be purpose-designed to underpin full electric vehicles.

It seems likely that the XC100 would also feature Volvo’s latest autonomous driving features, the development of, the marque has recently stated it is fast-tracking.
